State Health Mission Agency
Full Form of SHMA
What is SHMA?
The State Health Mission Agency (SHMA) is the state-level nodal body under India's National Health Mission (NHM) responsible for implementing public health programmes, including family welfare, maternal and child health, and disease control initiatives. Established as part of the NHM framework, which merged the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), the SHMA operates in each state or union territory to plan, execute, and monitor health schemes tailored to regional needs. It coordinates with district health societies and urban health centres to ensure service delivery, maintains health data, and manages budgets allocated by central and state governments. The SHMA also plays a crucial role in addressing health emergencies and pandemic responses, such as COVID-19 management at the state level. In competitive exams like UPSC, state public service commissions, and health officer exams, questions often cover the structure and functions of the SHMA under the wider NHM umbrella. Understanding its role helps students grasp India's decentralised health governance model.
