State Health Laboratory
Full Form of SHL
What is SHL?
A State Health Laboratory (SHL) is a government-operated diagnostic and research facility that functions under the Department of Health and Family Welfare in various Indian states. These laboratories play a crucial role in the public health infrastructure by conducting clinical tests, water and food quality analysis, disease surveillance, and outbreak investigations. SHLs actively support the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and assist in confirming diseases like dengue, tuberculosis, malaria, cholera, and COVID-19 through RT-PCR and other advanced molecular testing methods. They also serve as referral centres for district hospitals and primary health centres, ensuring accurate diagnosis reaches rural and semi-urban populations across the country. Many SHLs are equipped with biosafety level facilities and participate in national health campaigns run by the National Health Mission and the Indian Council of Medical Research. In India, SHLs are particularly important for medical officers, lab technicians, microbiologists, and public health professionals preparing for UPSC, state PSC, NHM, and various paramedical recruitment examinations where questions on health infrastructure frequently appear.
