Social and Emotional Learning
Full Form of SEL
What is SEL?
Social and Emotional Learning, commonly abbreviated as SEL, refers to the systematic process through which individuals, especially students, develop the ability to understand and manage their emotions, set meaningful goals, demonstrate empathy towards others, build healthy relationships, and make responsible life decisions. In India, SEL has gained remarkable prominence following the National Education Policy 2020, which strongly advocated for holistic development and the integration of life skills, mindfulness practices, and emotional intelligence into mainstream school curricula. The Central Board of Secondary Education along with several state education boards has begun embedding SEL components within classroom teaching, recognizing that academic achievement alone cannot ensure a child's well-rounded growth. Leading schools across cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad have established dedicated SEL periods, counseling sessions, and peer-mentoring programs. Various EdTech startups, NGOs, and even corporate India have embraced SEL frameworks for leadership development and mental health initiatives. The concept is particularly relevant for aspirants preparing for teaching eligibility examinations such as CTET, UGC NET Education, and KVS, where questions on learner-centered pedagogy frequently appear.
