Small Business Development
Full Form of SBD
What is SBD?
Small Business Development (SBD) refers to the structured process of nurturing and growing small-scale enterprises through financial aid, training, mentorship, market access, and supportive policy frameworks. In India, SBD holds significant importance as the MSME sector, comprising over 6.3 crore enterprises, contributes nearly 30 percent to the national GDP and provides employment to more than 11 crore people. Various government institutions, including SIDBI, NABARD, NSIC, and the Ministry of MSME, actively promote SBD through schemes like the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), MUDRA Yojana, and the Startup India initiative. These programmes are particularly aimed at first-generation entrepreneurs, women-led businesses, SC and ST candidates, and rural artisans seeking self-employment opportunities. SBD also appears frequently in the syllabi of management and commerce courses, and the term is widely used in state industrial policy documents. For aspirants preparing for competitive examinations such as UPSC, SSC, banking recruitment, and state public service commissions, knowledge of SBD-related government schemes and their operational mechanisms is highly valuable and is regularly featured in the general awareness and economy sections.
