Rainwater Harvesting
Full Form of RWH
What is RWH?
Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) is the practice of collecting and storing rainwater from rooftops, surfaces, and catchment areas for later use, rather than allowing it to run off and be lost. In India, RWH holds tremendous importance due to the country's heavy dependence on monsoons and growing concerns over groundwater depletion, especially in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad where water tables have dropped drastically. The method is widely adopted in rural households, urban apartment complexes, schools, government buildings, and agricultural fields, helping recharge wells, borewells, and aquifers while reducing reliance on municipal water supply. Several Indian states including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Kerala have made rainwater harvesting mandatory in buildings through state-level building bylaws. Central government bodies like the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) actively promote RWH under schemes such as the Jal Jeevan Mission. RWH frequently appears in competitive exams including UPSC Civil Services, SSC, state PSCs, and school-level examinations under General Science and Environmental Studies sections, making it a high-value topic for aspirants across India.
