Resident Welfare Group
Full Form of RWG
What is RWG?
A Resident Welfare Group, commonly abbreviated as RWG, is a formal association formed by residents of a housing society, apartment complex, or gated community in India to manage common interests and address collective concerns. The group typically consists of elected members who oversee maintenance of shared infrastructure, security arrangements, parking allocation, garbage disposal, and dispute resolution among neighbours. In Indian cities, particularly metropolitan areas like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, RWGs play a crucial role in liaising with municipal authorities, utility providers, and law enforcement agencies on behalf of residents. The concept has gained significant traction since the 1990s alongside the rise of cooperative housing and private residential developments across urban India. RWGs also organise community events, cultural celebrations, and welfare activities for senior citizens and children within the neighbourhood. While the term RWA (Resident Welfare Association) is more widespread, RWG is frequently used interchangeably in several states and Union Territories. Understanding the functioning of resident welfare bodies is useful for aspirants preparing for civil services, banking, and law examinations where questions on cooperative governance, property law, and civic administration frequently appear.
