Resident Welfare Association
Full Form of RWA
What is RWA?
A Resident Welfare Association, commonly abbreviated as RWA, is a formal body of residents who live in a particular housing society, apartment complex, gated community, or colony. It functions as the representative voice of the residents in dealings with civic authorities, developers, and service providers. In India, RWAs play an active role in maintaining common areas, organising cultural events, addressing security concerns, resolving internal disputes, and coordinating with municipal bodies over issues like water supply, garbage collection, and street lighting. They are typically registered under the Societies Registration Act and operate through elected office-bearers such as the president, secretary, and treasurer. RWAs are especially influential in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, where apartment living is widespread. During the COVID-19 pandemic, RWAs also played a vital role in enforcing local rules and supporting vulnerable residents. The concept is frequently discussed in Indian competitive exams covering polity, urban governance, and civil society topics.
