Remote Radio Head
Full Form of RRH
What is RRH?
Remote Radio Head, commonly abbreviated as RRH, is a critical component in modern wireless telecommunications networks that has become increasingly important in India's digital infrastructure. It is essentially a radio transceiver that is installed at the top of cell towers and connects to a baseband unit through fibre optic cables, enabling a distributed network architecture. In India, RRH technology plays a vital role in the massive 4G LTE and 5G NR rollouts carried out by major telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, which collectively serve over a billion mobile subscribers across the country. The technology allows operators to split the traditional base station into two functional parts, with the radio frequency components placed near the antenna at the tower top and the baseband processing unit located at ground level, significantly improving network efficiency, reducing signal loss, and lowering overall power consumption. RRH equipment is manufactured and supplied by global vendors including Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, and Samsung, many of whom have significant manufacturing and research operations in India. This acronym is commonly encountered in competitive exams such as those conducted by BSNL JTO, MTNL, and various state-level technical recruitment tests for telecom engineers and network planners.
