Radio Access Network
Full Form of RAN
What is RAN?
A Radio Access Network (RAN) is a critical component of mobile telecommunications that connects individual devices—such as smartphones, tablets, and IoT sensors—to the core network via radio waves. In India, the RAN is the backbone of cellular coverage, spanning dense urban areas and remote villages alike. It consists of base stations (towers), antennas, and controllers that manage radio resources, handle handovers, and ensure seamless data and voice transmission. With India's rapid 4G expansion and ongoing 5G rollout by operators like Jio and Airtel, the RAN has become synonymous with network performance and user experience. Modern RANs are evolving towards Open RAN (O-RAN), which allows interoperability between vendors and reduces costs—key for bridging India's digital divide. The term is widely used by telecom engineers, policymakers in the Department of Telecommunications, and students preparing for exams like GATE and IES in the Electronics & Communication stream. Understanding RAN is essential for grasping how India’s telecom infrastructure supports over a billion mobile connections and enables services from mobile banking to online education.
