What is RPE?
Rate of Perceived Exertion, commonly abbreviated as RPE, is a widely used psychophysical scale that measures how hard a person feels they are working during physical activity or exercise. Developed initially by Swedish researcher Gunnar Borg, the RPE scale helps individuals and trainers quantify exercise intensity based on personal perception rather than relying solely on objective metrics like heart rate. In India, RPE is extensively used in sports science laboratories, physiotherapy clinics, cardiac rehabilitation centres, and fitness training programmes. It is particularly valuable in monitoring athletes in institutions like the Sports Authority of India, the Army Physical Training Corps, and university-level sports programmes. Medical professionals including physiotherapists, cardiologists, and rehabilitation specialists use the Borg RPE scale to assess patients recovering from heart conditions, surgeries, or chronic illnesses. The scale typically ranges from 6 to 20 or 0 to 10, where higher numbers indicate greater perceived effort. For competitive exams like NET, SET in physical education, and various sports science entrance tests, understanding RPE is considered essential as it forms a fundamental concept in exercise physiology and fitness assessment.
