What is RNP?
Required Navigation Performance, commonly abbreviated as RNP, is a critical concept in modern aviation that defines a set of navigation specifications used for aircraft operating in controlled airspace. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) extensively use RNP standards to streamline air traffic management, particularly at busy airports like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, where conventional ground-based navigation aids are supplemented or replaced by satellite-based procedures. RNP allows aircraft to fly precise routes using onboard navigation systems, including GPS and inertial reference units, ensuring accurate lateral and vertical positioning without depending solely on ground stations. This technology has become especially significant in Indian aviation for enabling fuel-efficient flight paths, reducing congestion, and supporting operations during poor weather conditions.
