Ramakrishna Math
Full Form of RKM
What is RKM?
Ramakrishna Math (RKM) is a spiritual and philanthropic organization founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, inspired by his guru Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Headquartered at Belur Math in West Bengal, it is dedicated to the dissemination of Vedantic philosophy, interfaith harmony, and social service. RKM operates through numerous centres across India and worldwide, offering free education, healthcare, rural development, and disaster relief. Its monks and volunteers conduct meditation classes, spiritual discourses, and youth camps, aiming to integrate spirituality with practical life. The Math is governed by a democratically elected board and follows a non-sectarian approach, accepting all religions. In India, RKM is widely respected for its monastic discipline and charitable work, often being associated with the Ramakrishna Mission (its service wing). The organization publishes books and journals, including the monthly 'Prabuddha Bharata'. For competitive exams like UPSC and state PSCs, RKM appears in questions related to Indian Renaissance, social reformers, and modern religious movements. Its emphasis on 'service to God through service to man' makes it a unique blend of spirituality and social action, deeply embedded in Indian cultural and educational landscapes.
