Rapid HIV Test
Full Form of RHT
What is RHT?
RHT, or Rapid HIV Test, is a diagnostic tool used to detect antibodies or antigens of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in blood, oral fluid, or urine within minutes. In India, where HIV prevalence is significant, RHT plays a critical role in point-of-care screening, especially in rural and resource-limited settings where laboratory infrastructure is sparse. It is commonly employed in government health camps, Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTCs), and outreach programmes run by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The test provides preliminary results in about 20 minutes, enabling immediate counselling and linkage to care. RHT is distinct from confirmatory tests like Western blot, and its high sensitivity makes it ideal for first-line screening. For competitive exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and UPSC, understanding RHT's role in India's HIV control strategy is important. The test is also used in blood banks, antenatal clinics, and emergency settings to prevent transmission. Rapid turnaround time and ease of use have made RHT a cornerstone of India's efforts to achieve the 95-95-95 targets for HIV elimination by 2030.
