Renal Function Test
Full Form of RFT
What is RFT?
A Renal Function Test (RFT) is a group of blood and urine tests that evaluate how well the kidneys are working. The kidneys filter waste products, excess water, and other impurities from the blood. These tests measure levels of substances such as creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and electrolytes in the blood, as well as protein or albumin in urine. In India, RFTs are widely used in both routine health check-ups and for diagnosing chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which are leading causes of kidney disease. They are also essential before surgeries and for monitoring patients on certain medications. RFTs are performed in clinics, hospitals, and diagnostic laboratories across the country. For medical students and professionals, understanding RFT interpretation is crucial for exams like NEET PG, USMLE, and nursing licensure. The test helps in early detection of kidney impairment, allowing timely intervention to prevent progression to kidney failure. In Indian healthcare, RFTs are often included in comprehensive wellness packages and are recommended annually for individuals over 40 or those with risk factors.
