Kidney Function Test
Full Form of KFT
What is KFT?
Kidney Function Test (KFT) is a panel of blood and urine tests that evaluate how well the kidneys are removing waste and balancing electrolytes. In India, KFT is widely prescribed by physicians and nephrologists to detect early signs of chronic kidney disease, monitor diabetic or hypertensive patients, and assess acute kidney injury. The test typically measures serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid, electrolytes like sodium and potassium, and urine protein-to-creatinine ratio. It is performed in pathology labs across both urban and rural healthcare facilities. KFT is essential for patients with risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, or family history of renal disorders. In Indian medical exams like NEET PG and USMLE, concepts of KFT interpretation and normal ranges are frequently tested. Regular KFT screening is recommended annually for at-risk populations to enable timely intervention and prevent progression to end-stage renal disease. The test is affordable and accessible under government health schemes like Ayushman Bharat.
