Radiological First Aid
Full Form of RFA
What is RFA?
Radiological First Aid (RFA) refers to the immediate care provided to individuals exposed to ionizing radiation or radioactive contamination. In India, RFA protocols are established by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and are an integral part of safety training for personnel in nuclear facilities, hospitals using radiation therapy, and industrial radiography units. The procedures involve assessing exposure levels, decontaminating external surfaces, monitoring internal contamination, and administering medical countermeasures such as Prussian blue or potassium iodide when indicated. RFA is also emphasized in disaster management drills conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for nuclear and radiological emergencies. Medical students and healthcare professionals in radiology departments learn these standardized steps to manage accidental exposure quickly. Given India's expanding nuclear energy program and increasing use of radiation in medicine, knowledge of RFA is essential for emergency preparedness. For competitive exams like AIIMS, PGIMER, and nursing officer exams, RFA may appear in questions related to radiation safety and first aid protocols.
