Regional Eye Hospital
Full Form of REH
What is REH?
A Regional Eye Hospital (REH) is a specialised medical facility focused on diagnosis, treatment and surgery of eye-related conditions, typically serving a specific geographic region within India. These hospitals are often set up by state governments or public health departments to provide affordable ophthalmological care, including cataract surgeries, glaucoma management, retinal disorders and paediatric eye care. REHs play a vital role in India's public healthcare system by bridging the gap between primary health centres and tertiary super-speciality eye institutes, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where access to eye specialists is limited. They are commonly referenced in state health department reports, national blindness control programmes and medical referral chains. For competitive exams like UPSC, AIIMS and state PCS, understanding the role of REHs is important under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI). The presence of REHs significantly contributes to reducing preventable blindness and improving vision-related quality of life across Indian communities.
