Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine
Full Form of QIV
What is QIV?
Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine (QIV) is a vaccine that provides protection against four different influenza virus strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). It is designed to offer broader coverage compared to the older trivalent vaccines, which only targeted three strains. In India, QIV is increasingly recommended by healthcare professionals, especially during the pre-monsoon and winter months when flu cases peak. The vaccine is administered via injection and is available in both egg-based and cell-culture formulations. It is used for individuals aged 6 months and older, with particular emphasis on high-risk groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. The Indian Ministry of Health and various state health departments promote seasonal influenza vaccination, including QIV, as part of their public health strategies. While not a mandatory vaccine in India, it is widely available in private clinics and some government health centres. For students appearing in medical or nursing entrance exams, understanding the difference between QIV and TIV is often tested. The vaccine plays a crucial role in reducing the burden of seasonal flu, hospitalizations, and complications, especially in densely populated urban areas.

My doctor advised me to get the QIV this year because the quadrivalent vaccine covers more flu strains than the older trivalent one.
