Quality Health Unit
Full Form of QHU
What is QHU?
A Quality Health Unit, commonly abbreviated as QHU, refers to a dedicated department or team within a hospital, clinic, or public health organisation that focuses on maintaining and improving the standard of healthcare services. In India, QHUs have become increasingly important as the healthcare sector expands and accreditation bodies like NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Enterprises) push for structured quality frameworks. These units typically monitor patient safety, clinical outcomes, infection control, and adherence to standard treatment protocols. They also conduct internal audits, train medical staff on best practices, and ensure compliance with both national and international healthcare standards. QHUs are commonly found in large government hospitals, medical colleges, corporate hospital chains, and district health offices across states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Delhi. Public health programmes under the National Health Mission also reference quality units at the state and district level. The concept is particularly relevant for students preparing for medical entrance exams, public health courses, and competitive examinations conducted by UPSC, where healthcare administration and quality assurance are frequently tested topics.
