Portable X-ray System
Full Form of PXS
What is PXS?
A Portable X-ray System (PXS) is a compact, mobile medical imaging device used to capture radiographic images of the human body without requiring a fixed, dedicated radiology room. In India, PXS units are increasingly deployed in rural and remote healthcare centres, primary health centres (PHCs), and mobile medical vans to provide diagnostic support for conditions such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, fractures, and lung infections. They are also used in disaster relief camps and during mass health screening drives. PXS typically consists of a lightweight X-ray generator, a digital detector panel, and a portable stand or wheeled cart, allowing easy transport and setup. The technology is especially valuable in India’s tier-2 and tier-3 cities where access to full-scale radiology departments is limited. For medical students and aspirants of exams like NEET PG and AIIMS, knowledge of PXS and other portable imaging systems is relevant under the radiology and orthopaedics syllabus. The device has gained further importance during the COVID-19 pandemic for bedside chest X-rays, reducing patient movement and infection risk. Governments and NGOs are investing in PXS to strengthen India’s diagnostic infrastructure and achieve universal health coverage.
