Periventricular Leukomalacia
Full Form of PVL
What is PVL?
Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) is a form of brain injury that primarily affects premature infants, characterised by the softening and necrosis of white matter near the lateral ventricles. In India, PVL is a significant concern in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) due to the high number of preterm births, often resulting from infections, hypoxia, or hemodynamic instability. The condition is diagnosed using cranial ultrasound or MRI, and its severity is graded from mild to severe. PVL is a leading cause of long-term neurodevelopmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, cognitive delays, and visual impairments. Indian paediatricians and neonatologists routinely screen at-risk preterm babies for PVL, and early intervention protocols, including physiotherapy and neurorehabilitation, are implemented to improve outcomes. For medical students and residents, PVL is a crucial topic in neonatology and paediatric neurology, frequently appearing in exams like NEET PG and AIIMS PG. Understanding the pathophysiology, risk factors, and management strategies is essential for clinical practice and research in India’s expanding neonatal care ecosystem.
