Peripheral Vascular Disease
Full Form of PVD
What is PVD?
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) is a medical condition characterized by the narrowing or blockage of blood vessels outside the heart and brain, most commonly affecting the arteries supplying the legs. This restricts blood flow, leading to symptoms such as leg pain during walking (claudication), numbness, and in severe cases, non-healing ulcers or gangrene. In India, PVD is a growing health concern due to rising rates of diabetes, hypertension, and smoking, particularly among the urban and elderly populations. It is diagnosed through clinical examination, ankle-brachial index (ABI) testing, and imaging like Doppler ultrasound. Treatment involves lifestyle modifications, medications to improve blood flow, and angioplasty or bypass surgery for advanced cases. PVD is often confused with coronary artery disease, but it specifically affects peripheral arteries. Awareness campaigns by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and diabetes associations have highlighted the need for early detection. For students preparing for medical entrance exams like NEET PG, PVD is a frequently tested topic in medicine and surgery, often appearing in clinical case scenarios. Understanding its pathophysiology and management is crucial for aspiring doctors treating vascular disorders in primary and tertiary care settings across India.
