Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups
Full Form of PTG
What is PTG?
Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, commonly abbreviated as PTG, is a classification used by the Government of India to identify tribal communities that are more vulnerable than regular Scheduled Tribes. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs officially recognises these groups based on criteria such as pre-agricultural technology, extremely low literacy rates, subsistence-level economies, and declining or stagnant population. Originally, 75 such groups were identified, and the list has since been expanded under various policy interventions. PTGs receive special development support, including dedicated schemes for housing, healthcare, education, and livelihood promotion under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes. States like Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands host significant PTG populations. The classification is crucial for targeted welfare delivery, as these groups often live in remote forest areas and face severe socio-economic disadvantages. The term appears regularly in UPSC, SSC, state PSC, and other competitive examinations where questions on tribal welfare policies and constitutional safeguards are commonly asked.
