Pulse Polio Week
Full Form of PPW
What is PPW?
Pulse Polio Week (PPW) is a nationwide immunization campaign in India aimed at eradicating polio by administering oral polio vaccine (OPV) to children under five years of age. Launched by the Government of India in 1995 as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, PPW is conducted in multiple rounds each year, often in collaboration with state health departments, UNICEF, and WHO. During this week, thousands of vaccination booths are set up across urban and rural areas, and health workers go door-to-door to ensure no child is missed. The campaign uses a synchronized approach where all states participate simultaneously, making it one of the largest public health interventions in the world. India was declared polio-free in 2014 by the World Health Organization, a milestone achieved largely due to the relentless efforts of PPW campaigns. Today, PPW continues as a surveillance and booster mechanism to maintain the country's polio-free status. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC or state PCS, PPW is a crucial topic under public health schemes, highlighting India's success in disease eradication through mass immunization drives.
