Pakistan Occupied Kashmir
Full Form of POK
What is POK?
Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) refers to the portion of the Kashmir region that has been under illegal occupation by Pakistan since the 1947 partition of India. It comprises the territories of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan, which Pakistan administers as separate entities despite India’s consistent claim over the entire former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. In Indian defence and political discourse, POK is a term of strategic significance, used to underscore the unresolved territorial dispute and to assert India’s sovereignty over the area. The term appears in official statements, parliamentary debates, defence briefings, and exam syllabi related to Indian polity, geography, and international relations. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, understanding POK’s status, the Line of Control (LoC), and related UN resolutions is essential. India maintains that POK is an integral part of its territory and has repeatedly called for the return of this land through peaceful bilateral dialogue. The usage of POK in Indian media and policy reflects the country’s firm position on the Kashmir issue and its rejection of Pakistan’s claim over the region.
