Azad Jammu and Kashmir
Full Form of AJK
What is AJK?
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) refers to the portion of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir that is administered by Pakistan. It is a self-governing territory under the Pakistani constitution, with its own president, prime minister, and legislative assembly, though Pakistan retains control over defense and foreign affairs. In the Indian context, AJK is often termed Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and is considered an integral part of India under the Instrument of Accession. The region is a key point in the ongoing Kashmir conflict, which has been a major issue in India-Pakistan relations since 1947. AJK is governed under the 1974 Interim Constitution and its capital is Muzaffarabad. The term is used in diplomatic, political, and educational discussions, including in Indian civil services exams where questions on the Kashmir dispute frequently appear. Understanding AJK is crucial for students of Indian polity, international relations, and history, as it represents one of the most sensitive territorial disputes in the world. The Line of Control (LoC) separates AJK from Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The region's status remains unresolved under United Nations resolutions, and it continues to influence bilateral ties between India and Pakistan.
