pH Leuco-crystal violet
Full Form of PLX
What is PLX?
PLX stands for pH Leuco-crystal violet, a chemical stain used primarily in microbiology and medical laboratory diagnostics. The stain is employed to detect the production of hydrogen peroxide by bacteria, which is an indicator of the presence of certain enzymes such as catalase. In the Indian context, PLX is commonly used in clinical microbiology labs, especially in medical colleges and diagnostic centers, to identify bacterial species during routine culture and sensitivity testing. The test involves adding a drop of PLX reagent to a bacterial colony on a slide; a blue or purple color change indicates a positive result. This method is quick, cost-effective, and widely taught in MBBS, B.Sc. Microbiology, and lab technician courses across India. PLX is also relevant for exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and various state medical entrance tests, where questions on bacterial identification or enzyme detection may appear. The stain is preferred over traditional methods due to its stability and ease of use. In Indian healthcare settings, PLX helps in the rapid diagnosis of infections like urinary tract infections, wound infections, and respiratory tract infections, thereby aiding in timely antibiotic therapy.
