What is PLT?

Platelets, commonly abbreviated as PLT, are small, colorless blood cells essential for clotting and preventing excessive bleeding. In the human body, platelets aggregate at injury sites to form a plug, initiating the coagulation cascade. In India, PLT count is routinely measured as part of a complete blood count (CBC) test, often prescribed during health check-ups, fever evaluations, or before surgeries. The normal platelet count ranges from 1.5 to 4.5 lakh per microliter of blood. A low count (thrombocytopenia) can occur due to dengue, malaria, chemotherapy, or nutritional deficiencies, while a high count may indicate inflammation or bone marrow disorders.
