Polycystic Kidney Disease
Full Form of PKD
What is PKD?
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. Over time, these cysts enlarge and impair kidney function, potentially leading to chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal failure. PKD is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases, affecting millions worldwide including a significant number of Indians. In India, the prevalence of PKD is notable due to the country's large population and limited access to early genetic screening. The condition is typically diagnosed through ultrasound imaging or genetic testing, and symptoms such as high blood pressure, back pain, and blood in urine often appear in adulthood. PKD is broadly categorized into two types: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD), which is more common and usually manifests in adulthood, and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD), a rare and severe form presenting in childhood. Management involves controlling blood pressure, pain management, and treating complications like urinary tract infections. For advanced cases, dialysis or kidney transplantation may be required. In the Indian medical education context, PKD is a key topic in nephrology and genetics exams, often appearing in MBBS, MD, and NEET PG question papers. Awareness and early detection remain critical to improving outcomes for patients across India.
