Public Grievance Officer
Full Form of PGO
What is PGO?
A Public Grievance Officer (PGO) is a designated official in Indian government ministries, departments, and public sector undertakings responsible for receiving, processing, and resolving complaints from citizens regarding administrative lapses, service delivery failures, or corruption. Under the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) of the Government of India, every ministry and department must appoint a PGO as the single point of contact for grievance redressal. The PGO ensures that complaints are acknowledged within a specified time, routed to the appropriate section, and resolved or escalated as needed. This system was strengthened by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) to improve transparency and accountability. PGOs operate across central and state government offices, public sector banks, and regulatory bodies. They are trained in grievance handling procedures and use digital platforms to monitor progress. For competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, a clear understanding of the PGO role and CPGRAMS is essential for the Public Administration and Governance sections. The PGO system reflects India's commitment to citizen-centric governance and has significantly reduced complaint pendency in many departments.
