Placental Growth Factor
Full Form of PGF
What is PGF?
Placental Growth Factor (PGF) is a protein belonging to the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family, primarily produced by the placenta during pregnancy. In India, PGF levels are measured as a key biomarker to assess the risk of preeclampsia, a serious hypertensive disorder affecting pregnant women. The test, often combined with sFlt-1 levels, helps in early detection and management of pregnancy complications. PGF plays a crucial role in promoting blood vessel growth in the placenta, ensuring adequate oxygen and nutrient supply to the fetus. Abnormal levels — either too low or too high — can indicate placental dysfunction, leading to conditions like intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) or preeclampsia. Indian hospitals and diagnostic labs have increasingly adopted PGF testing, especially in urban and semi-urban centers, following global guidelines from FIGO and NICE. The test is typically performed between 20 and 36 weeks of gestation and is covered under many maternal health programs. For medical students and obstetricians in India, understanding PGF is essential for competitive exams like NEET PG and MRCOG, where its role in placentation and pregnancy management is frequently questioned.
