Plug-in Electric Vehicle
Full Form of PEV
What is PEV?
A Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) is any motor vehicle that can be recharged from an external source of electricity, such as a wall socket or charging station, and uses electric motors for propulsion. This category includes Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). In India, PEVs are central to the government's push for sustainable mobility under schemes like FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles), which offers subsidies and tax benefits to promote adoption. They are used across personal transport, commercial fleets, and public transit, especially in urban areas where charging infrastructure is expanding. The term PEV is commonly used in policy documents, automotive industry reports, and environmental discussions. For competitive exams like UPSC or State PCS, questions may appear on electric vehicle policies, emission targets, or India's commitments under the Paris Agreement. As of 2025, PEVs constitute a growing share of new vehicle registrations, driven by rising fuel costs and awareness of air pollution. Challenges remain around battery cost, charging network density, and grid capacity, but ongoing investments by both public and private sectors aim to accelerate adoption.
