Public Enterprise Unit
Full Form of PEU
What is PEU?
The Public Enterprise Unit (PEU) is a specialized division within the Indian government, typically operating under the Ministry of Finance or the Department of Public Enterprises. Its primary role is to oversee, coordinate, and evaluate the performance of central public sector enterprises (CPSEs). The PEU advises on policy formulation, financial restructuring, disinvestment strategies, and corporate governance of state-owned companies. It also monitors key performance indicators and ensures alignment with national economic objectives. In India, the PEU is used in official communications, budget documents, and performance reviews of public sector undertakings. It acts as a bridge between the government and CPSEs, facilitating strategic decisions. For students preparing for UPSC, SSC, or banking exams, understanding the PEU’s function is important because questions on public sector reforms, disinvestment policy, and PSU governance often appear. The unit gained prominence after economic liberalization in 1991, when India began restructuring its public sector. It remains a key entity in government administration, especially during annual reviews and budget allocations. The PEU works closely with the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) and the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE).
