Department of Public Enterprises
Full Form of DPE
What is DPE?
The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) is a government department under the Ministry of Finance in India. It serves as the nodal agency for all Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), formulating policies related to their functioning, performance improvement, and corporate governance. The DPE issues guidelines on areas such as board composition, managerial remuneration, and the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) system for evaluating CPSE performance. It also advises other ministries on matters concerning public sector undertakings and coordinates with bodies like the Public Enterprises Selection Board. Established in 1990, the DPE replaced the earlier Bureau of Public Enterprises. Its role is critical in shaping the strategic direction of India's public sector, which includes giants like Coal India, ONGC, and NTPC. Students preparing for UPSC, SSC, or banking exams often encounter DPE in questions about government departments and public sector reforms. The department's work impacts economic policy and governance, making it a relevant topic for civil services aspirants.
