Post Dated Cheque
Full Form of PDC
What is PDC?
A post-dated cheque (PDC) is a cheque on which the drawer writes a future date instead of the current date, making it payable only on or after that specified date. In India, PDCs are extensively used in business transactions, loan repayments, rental agreements, and advance payments where the payee requires assurance of future payment. The cheque becomes a valid negotiable instrument only from the date written; until then, it cannot be encashed. Banks in India honor PDCs strictly according to the date mentioned on the cheque, not the date of issuance. Legally, PDCs are enforceable under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, and are considered valid contracts for future payments. They are commonly collected by lenders, landlords, and suppliers as security for EMIs, rent, or trade credit. Despite digital payment growth, PDCs remain popular due to their simplicity and legal backing. In banking exams such as IBPS, SBI PO, and RBI Grade B, questions on PDCs frequently appear to test understanding of negotiable instruments, cheque crossing, and endorsement rules. Proper handling of PDCs is crucial for bank employees and finance professionals to avoid legal disputes and ensure timely collection. Overall, PDCs serve as a reliable instrument for deferred payment in India's formal and informal economy.
