Personal Consumption Quota
Full Form of PCQ
What is PCQ?
Personal Consumption Quota (PCQ) is a policy implemented by the Government of India that allows individuals to import gold for personal use without paying customs duty, subject to specified limits. Under this scheme, a resident Indian can bring up to 1 kilogram of gold per financial year as part of their baggage, provided the total value does not exceed ₹5 lakh for women and ₹1 lakh for men (with higher limits for special cases). The PCQ aims to curb illegal smuggling, meet domestic demand for jewelry and religious purposes, and align with the country's balance of payments. This quota is administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and enforced by the Customs Department. It is commonly used during international travel when individuals declare gold items as part of their accompanied baggage. The PCQ is distinct from other gold import mechanisms such as the 80:20 scheme or the Gold Monetisation Scheme. For competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, RBI Grade B, and Banking exams, questions on PCQ frequently appear under the topics of economic policies, foreign trade, and gold import regulations. Understanding the PCQ is crucial for grasping India's approach to gold demand management and its impact on the current account deficit.
