Directorate General of Foreign Trade
Full Form of DGFT
What is DGFT?
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is an apex government agency under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is responsible for formulating and implementing the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) of India, which governs the export and import of goods and services. Established initially as the Office of the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports, it was renamed DGFT in 1991 as part of trade liberalization reforms. The DGFT issues licenses, authorizations, and certificates required for international trade, such as Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and various export incentive schemes. It also administers provisions of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, and ensures compliance with World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments. In India, DGFT operates through its headquarters in New Delhi and 38 regional offices across the country, making it accessible for businesses of all sizes. Its role is critical for promoting India's exports, managing strategic imports, and facilitating ease of doing business. For students preparing for UPSC, banking, or commerce exams, understanding DGFT’s functions and its link with the Foreign Trade Policy is often tested in sections on Indian economy and trade.
