Overseas Voters Unit
Full Form of OVU
What is OVU?
The Overseas Voters Unit (OVU) is a specialized division within the Election Commission of India (ECI) tasked with facilitating the registration and voting process for non-resident Indians (NRIs) living abroad. Established under the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the OVU oversees the enrolment of eligible overseas Indian citizens as general electors, enabling them to cast their votes in Indian elections via postal ballot or through designated polling stations in foreign countries. The unit works closely with Indian embassies and consulates to ensure smooth dissemination of information, form submission, and ballot collection. The OVU is operational during every Lok Sabha and state assembly election cycle, and its significance has grown with increasing NRI participation following legislative amendments in 2011. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, understanding the OVU’s role is crucial for questions related to electoral reforms, diaspora engagement, and the challenges of remote voting infrastructure in India.
