It defines the overhead, forward error correction (FEC), and payload mapping for various bit rates, enabling reliable long-haul transmission. In India, OTU is a critical component of the telecom backbone infrastructure deployed by operators such as BSNL, Reliance Jio, and Airtel to support high-speed internet, 4G/5G mobile backhaul, and enterprise connectivity.
