Ordnance Depot Unit
Full Form of ODU
What is ODU?
An Ordnance Depot Unit (ODU) is a specialized military establishment within the Indian Army responsible for the receipt, storage, maintenance, accounting, and issue of ordnance stores including weapons, ammunition, explosives, and other combat supplies. It operates under the administrative control of the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) and ensures that frontline troops receive critical material in a timely and secure manner. ODUs are strategically located across India—in cities like Jabalpur, Pune, and Secunderabad—to support different commands and operational theaters. Their role is vital for logistics and supply chain management in peacetime as well as during conflicts. Safety protocols, inventory control, and periodic audits are essential functions performed at these depots. In defence examinations such as the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and National Defence Academy (NDA) tests, knowledge of ODUs and their functions is often tested under topics related to military organization and equipment. Aspiring officers must understand the hierarchy and responsibilities within the ordnance services to answer questions on logistics and support systems accurately.
