Operational Support Zone
Full Form of OSZ
What is OSZ?
An Operational Support Zone (OSZ) is a designated geographic area within a theatre of operations where logistics, maintenance, medical evacuation, and administrative support functions are concentrated to sustain combat forces. In the Indian context, OSZs are established by the Indian Armed Forces during major exercises, border deployments, or internal security operations to ensure uninterrupted supply of ammunition, fuel, rations, and spare parts. These zones are typically located behind the forward line of troops but within the overall operational area, allowing for rapid response to frontline demands. The concept is integral to the Indian Army’s logistics doctrine, especially in high-altitude or remote regions like Ladakh and the Northeast, where terrain and weather complicate supply chains. OSZs are also used by paramilitary forces such as the CRPF during counter-insurgency operations. In defence examinations like the CDS or AFCAT, questions on logistics zones and their roles in battle sustainment frequently appear. Understanding OSZ helps candidates grasp how modern warfare relies on seamless support networks to maintain combat readiness.
