Occupational Safety and Health
Full Form of OSH
What is OSH?
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) refers to the discipline and regulatory framework aimed at ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. In India, OSH is governed by the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, which consolidates and reforms numerous prior laws such as the Factories Act, 1948 and the Mines Act, 1952. The primary objective of OSH is to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities through hazard identification, risk assessment, and implementation of control measures. It is applied across all sectors including manufacturing, construction, mining, agriculture, and services. OSH standards are enforced by state labour departments and the Directorate General of Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI). For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, or state PCS, questions on labour codes and safety regulations often appear under industrial relations and social legislation. Understanding OSH is crucial for professionals in human resources, industrial engineering, and safety management. The concept also aligns with international standards set by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
