Office of Legal Metrology
Full Form of OLM
What is OLM?
The Office of Legal Metrology (OLM) is a regulatory body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It is responsible for implementing and enforcing the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, which aims to ensure accuracy and reliability in weights, measures, and measuring instruments used in trade and commerce. OLM plays a crucial role in consumer protection by preventing unfair trade practices, such as underweight packages or faulty weighing machines. The department operates at both central and state levels, with the Controller of Legal Metrology at the state level and the Director of Legal Metrology at the central level. OLM verifies and stamps weighing and measuring devices across sectors like petrol pumps, grocery stores, gold jewellery shops, and industrial scales. It also regulates packaged goods, ensuring net quantity and declarations are accurate. The office conducts periodic inspections, issues licenses, and investigates complaints. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and RBI Grade B, understanding OLM is essential as it appears in Indian Polity and Consumer Protection topics. The OLM also coordinates with international metrology bodies to maintain standards.
