World Organisation for Animal Health (formerly Office International des Epizooties)
Full Form of OIE
What is OIE?
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) is an intergovernmental organisation founded in 1924 to ensure transparent and timely sharing of information on animal disease outbreaks worldwide. Its core mandate includes setting international standards for animal health and zoonotic diseases, facilitating trade in animals and animal products, and improving veterinary services globally. In India, the OIE collaborates closely with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to monitor and control diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, Rabies, and Avian Influenza. India is an active member of the OIE and has several reference laboratories and collaborating centres recognised by the organisation. The OIE plays a crucial role in India’s livestock sector, which supports millions of rural livelihoods, by providing guidelines for disease surveillance, vaccination campaigns, and safe trade practices. Students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, ICAR ARS, or veterinary science entrance tests should note that OIE standards are frequently cited in questions on animal husbandry, food safety, and international cooperation. The acronym 'OIE' derives from the French name 'Office International des Epizooties', but the English name is officially used today. The organisation is headquartered in Paris and works in partnership with the WHO and FAO under the One Health approach.
