OpenID Connect
Full Form of OIDC
What is OIDC?
OpenID Connect (OIDC) is an authentication protocol built on top of the OAuth 2.0 framework, enabling clients to verify the identity of end-users and obtain basic profile information in a secure and interoperable manner. In India, OIDC is increasingly adopted in government e-governance initiatives, such as the Aadhaar-based authentication systems, digital signature services, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem to ensure secure user login without exposing credentials. It is widely used by Indian tech companies, fintech startups, and educational portals for single sign-on (SSO) and federated identity management. OIDC is also relevant for competitive exams like GATE and UGC-NET where questions on web security protocols appear. The protocol leverages JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) to structure identity data, making it efficient for mobile and web applications. Its role is pivotal in India’s Digital India campaign, driving secure access to services like DigiLocker, UMANG, and income tax portals. By providing a standardised way to authenticate users across different platforms, OIDC enhances user experience while maintaining strong security guarantees. Its integration with India’s growing digital infrastructure underscores its importance in balancing convenience and privacy.
