Security Assertion Markup Language
Full Form of SAML
What is SAML?
Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) is an open standard XML-based protocol used for exchanging authentication and authorization data between identity providers (IdPs) and service providers (SPs). It enables single sign-on (SSO) capabilities, allowing users to log in once and access multiple applications without re-entering credentials. In India, SAML is widely adopted by government portals like DigiLocker and Umang, as well as by educational institutions such as IITs and NITs for unified campus access. Enterprises and banking platforms use SAML to secure employee and customer authentication. The protocol ensures that identity assertions are digitally signed and encrypted, providing robust security against phishing and replay attacks. For students preparing for IT certification exams like CISSP or CCSP, understanding SAML is crucial as it appears in questions on identity management and federation. SAML 2.0 is the current version and is commonly integrated with cloud services like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and Salesforce. Its role in enabling seamless and secure digital access aligns with India's push toward e-governance and Digital India initiatives.
