Overhead Tank
Full Form of OHT
What is OHT?
An overhead tank (OHT) is a water storage structure elevated above the ground to provide consistent water supply through gravity feed. In India, OHTs are ubiquitous in residential apartments, commercial complexes, and government buildings due to intermittent municipal water supply and frequent power cuts affecting pump operations. They are typically constructed from reinforced concrete, plastic, steel, or ferrocement, with capacities ranging from a few hundred to several thousand litres. OHTs collect water pumped from underground reservoirs or direct municipal connections, ensuring availability during non-supply hours and peak demand periods. They play a critical role in urban water management, especially in multi-storey buildings where direct municipal pressure is insufficient. In rural areas, community overhead tanks serve as centralised drinking water sources, often supported by government schemes. The design, structural integrity, and maintenance of OHTs are key topics in civil engineering curricula and municipal regulations. While not directly tested in most competitive exams, knowledge of OHT design principles is relevant for GATE Civil Engineering, state-level engineering services exams, and water supply engineering interviews. Proper maintenance, including periodic cleaning and inspection, is essential to prevent contamination and structural failure.
