Oral Health Index
Full Form of OHI
What is OHI?
The Oral Health Index (OHI) is a standardized quantitative measure used to assess the oral hygiene status of individuals and populations. Developed by Greene and Vermillion in 1960, it remains a cornerstone in dental public health and epidemiological research. In India, OHI is widely utilized in community dentistry programs, school-based dental screenings, and national surveys to evaluate plaque and calculus levels. The index consists of two components: the Debris Index (DI) and the Calculus Index (CI), each scored on a scale of 0 to 3. The simplified version, OHI-S (Simplified Oral Health Index), is often used for its efficiency. Dental students in India learn to calculate OHI during their undergraduate and postgraduate training, and it is a recurrent topic in competitive exams such as NEET MDS and the Dental Council of India assessments. By providing a quick, reliable snapshot of oral cleanliness, OHI helps in identifying high-risk groups and planning preventive interventions. Its application extends from urban dental clinics to rural health camps, making it a versatile tool in India's diverse healthcare landscape. Understanding OHI is crucial for dental professionals aiming to improve community oral health outcomes.
