Open Government Data

What is OGD?

Open Government Data (OGD) refers to the principle that government-held data should be made available to the public in accessible, machine-readable formats, free of charge and without restrictions on reuse. In India, the OGD initiative is spearheaded by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The official portal, data.gov.in, serves as a central repository for datasets from over 100 central ministries, state governments, and other public agencies. These datasets cover areas such as agriculture, health, education, economy, and demographics, enabling citizens, researchers, journalists, and startups to analyse, visualise, and build applications that promote transparency and evidence-based decision-making. The Open Government Data policy was formally adopted in 2012, aligning with the global open data movement and India’s Digital India vision. It is widely used for academic research, policy analysis, and civic tech projects. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and UGC NET, understanding OGD is important under topics such as e-governance, Right to Information (RTI), and data sovereignty. OGD empowers citizens by turning raw government data into actionable insights, fostering accountability and innovation across sectors.
