Overseas Employment Wing
Full Form of OEW
What is OEW?
The Overseas Employment Wing (OEW) is a specialized department under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of the Government of India. It is responsible for regulating and facilitating the emigration of Indian workers seeking employment abroad, particularly in countries like those in the Gulf region, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Established to safeguard the welfare of Indian migrant workers, the OEW oversees the e-Migrate system, an online platform that streamlines emigration clearance, registration of recruitment agents, and tracking of worker contracts. The wing also coordinates with Protectors of Emigrants (POEs) across states to ensure compliance with the Emigration Act, 1983. OEW plays a crucial role in preventing exploitation, human trafficking, and fraudulent recruitment by verifying job offers and employer credentials. It is widely used by recruitment agencies, workers, and foreign employers. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, understanding the OEW's functions is relevant for questions on diaspora affairs and labour migration policies.
